The information has been extracted from the

Commonwealth War Graves Commission Debt of Honour Register

According to these records a total of 94 Colletts died during war, comprising 35 from the British Army, 10 from the Royal Navy (including 1 female), 7 from the Royal Air Force (including 1 female), 1 from the Merchant Navy, 12 from Australia, 6 from Canada, 1 from New Zealand and 4 from South Africa.

The list also includes 18 civilians comprising 10 males and 8 females.

Each list is in alphabetical order by Christian name and wherever possible additional information has been added in italics after the military details.

Behind every name is a sad story, but two in particular are more poignant.  Both feature civilian families.  The first being the four Colletts of 49 St John Street in Coventry; father Hugh Wilfred Collett (Ref. 15O38), his wife Agnes Elizabeth and their two sons Cyril Ernest and Sidney Albert, all of whom were killed on 14^th November 1940 while taking cover in the air raid shelter at the Armstrong-Siddeley Works at Parkside, which took a direct hit.  The second being Rose Emma Collett nee Froggitt (Ref. 80O2) and her two children Doreen aged ten, and Ronald aged eight, all killed while taking shelter in the Bethnal Green tube station on 3^rd March 1943.

Up to May 2026 only SIXTY of the 94 deceased have been identified as being members of the Collett Family Lines displayed on this website.

Alfred was born in 1916 and was the son of Alfred William and Emily Collett of Burton-on-Trent.  His name is listed on the Singapore War Memorial – Column 54.

The Singapore War Memorial stands in Kranji War Cemetery and commemorates the 24,000 casualties of the Commonwealth land and air forces who have no known grave.

Albert was born in 1924 the son of Herbert Collett, and his second wife Emily Bissell, of Kingstanding in Birmingham.  He was buried at Witton Cemetery – Grave 12318, Sector 96 - and a plaque carrying his name is on the wall of The Council House at Victoria Square in Birmingham.

Arthur was born in 1906 and the son of Albert Ernest and Mary Emmeline Collett of Wolvercote in Oxford.  He was buried at the Chungkai War Cemetery.

The Chungkai War Cemetery is located at Kanchanaburi in Thailand (formerly Siam).  See further reference to Kanchanaburi at Francis Robert Charles Collett below.  There are three war cemeteries at Kanchanaburi and all of them built for the 13,000 prisoners of war that died during the construction of the Burma to Siam Railway.  Kanchanaburi is also situated on the River Kwai at the point where it divides into two separate rivers.

He was buried at Aylesbury Cemetery – Grave 162, Sector 4.  Christopher Charles Collett was born at Poplar in 1890 the last child born to grocer John Collett and his wife Margaret, while John was the son of Stephen and Edith Collett of Poplar.

Collett, Charles Harry 28 years	Second Lieutenant 180754	1^st Derbyshire Yeomanry Royal Armoured Corp	2 September 1941
Charles Henry was born on 8^th October 1912 at Sewickley in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania and was the son of Charles Otto from Norway and Ida Collett from Germany, residing at Ewell in Surrey.  A plaque carrying his name is at St John’s Crematorium in Woking – Panel 1.

Eric was born in 1915 and was the son of Mr and Mrs Frederick Collett of Summertown in Oxford.  He was buried at Reichswald Forest War Cemetery at Kleve in Germany which was created for 7,594 Commonwealth servicemen after the end of the war.

Collett, Frederick Bertrand 31 years	Driver T/154726	Royal Army Service Corp	9 October 1945
Frederick was born in 1914 and was the son of Joseph Thomas Collett and Mary Jane Bruce and husband of Betsy Amanda Francis of Grimsby.  He died five months after peace was declared and was buried at Becklingen War Cemetery in Northern Germany.

Frederick was born in 1908 and was the son of Albert and Lizzie Collett and husband of Muriel Alma Slatford of Bladon in Oxfordshire.  He was buried at the Anzio War Cemetery.

Collett, Frederick William 39 years	Driver T/6216189	Royal Army Service Corp	3 July 1943
Frederick was born in 1904 and the husband of Emily Alice Collett of Tottenham.  He was buried at the Dely Ibrahim War Cemetery.  In the 1911 Census Frederick William was seven years old and was living with his father William John Collett, age 38, and his two older twin sisters Louisa Isabella and Maud Beatrice, who were eleven, within the Holborn district of London where Frederick William was born.

George was born in 1907 and was the son of Harry and Mary Timms Collett and husband of Aileen Anderson Collett of Stockton-on-Tees in County Durham.  His name is included amongst those listed on the Dunkirk Memorial – Column 24.

The Dunkirk Memorial stands at the entrance to the British War Graves Section of the Dunkirk Town Cemetery and commemorates more than 4,500 casualties of the British Expeditionary Force who died in the evacuation campaign, or after in captivity, who have no known grave.

Herbert Charles was born in 1917 and was the son of John James Collett and Helen Mary Pepprell of St Helier on the isle of Jersey.  He was also the husband of Joyce Annie Collett of Manyant on Jersey and his siblings were Reginald Charles Collett and Ellen Maud Collett.  Herbert Charles Collett was buried at the Bayeux War Cemetery in France.

Harold was born in 1916 and was the son of Major Harold Stephen Collett and Irene Muriel Collett of Madras India.  He was buried at the Tobruk War Cemetery in Libya.

John was born in 1912 and was the son of Arthur Lewis Collett and Rosa Punter of Kew and husband of Mary Alexandra Collett of Kew Green.  He was buried at El Alamein War Cemetery.

John was born in 1917 and was the son of Frederick and Constance Collett of Stourbridge in Worcestershire.  He was buried at the Forli War Cemetery.

The cemetery site at Forli was selected soon after the British Eighth Army took Forli in November 1944 and graves were brought into it from the surrounding battlefields.  Many of those buried there lost their lives in the heavy fighting between Rimini and Ravenna which took place in appalling weather from October to December 1944.

John was the son of Edith Collett of Tulse Hill in London.  He was buried at Dunkirk Town Cemetery – Special Memorial, Grave 15, Row 12, Plot 2.
Collett, John Lionel 18 years	Private 14679124	2^nd Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment	12 August 1944
John Lionel was born in 1926 and was the son of Lionel Albert and Kathleen Mary Collett of Henleaze in Bristol.  He was buried at the Bayeux War Cemetery.  Following his death, the Will of John Lionel Collett of Broadway Avenue in Henleaze was proved at Bristol on 27^th June 1945 in favour of Lionel Arthur Collett, a colliery agent’s manager, in the sum of £304 3 Shillings.

Jesse was born in 1917 and was the son of Charles William and Jessie Catherine Collett.  He was buried at St Manvieu War Cemetery.

Collett, Philip George 38 years	Sapper 2145232	Royal Engineers	19 July 1944
Philip was born in 1906 the husband of Kate Collett of Downend near Mangotsfield, Bristol.  He was buried at the Downend Mangotsfield Cemetery – Grave 1486, Sector D.  In 1911 the census listed just George Collett who was five years old and living at Keynsham where his birth was also registered during 1906 under the name of Phil George Collett.

Percival was born in 1923 and was the son of William Turner Collett and Janet Maud Collett and the husband of Edna May Collett of Wadborough in Worcestershire.  He was buried at Arnheim Oosterbeek War Cemetery and his name is included amongst those listed on the Stoulton War Memorial.

Rowland was born in 1922 and was the son of Henry Collett and Nesta Moore of Bootle, Liverpool, whose marriage was recorded at West Derby (Liverpool) register office (Ref. 8b 1449) during the third quarter of 1915.  His birth was recorded at Wolverhampton register office (Ref. 6d 1019) during the third quarter of 1922.  He was buried at Medjez El Bab War Cemetery.

Ronald Arthur was born in Croydon in 1908, the son of Richard Henry and Rose Ellen Collett and husband of Susannah May Collett of New Wallbottle in Northumberland.  He was buried at Syracuse War Cemetery in Sicily.

Ronald was born in 1920 and was the son of Percy Colmer Collett and Rose Ann Maud Collett of Holloway in London.  He was buried at Tottenham Cemetery – Grave 10326.  It was his grandfather who was Colmer Collett, whose birth was recorded at Hackney in 1853, the son of John and Mary Collett of Islington.  Colmer was an employee of the General Post Office and was married to Eliza with whom he had four children, the youngest being Percy Colmer Collett born in 1893.

He was buried at Tewkesbury Cemetery – Grave 2943 in the old part of the cemetery.
Collett, Robert George 20 years	Private 14519019	5^th Battalion Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry	27 August 1944
Robert was born in 1924 and was the son of John Percy and Lillian Violet Collett of St Austell in Cornwall.  He was buried at St Desir War Cemetery at Calvados.

St Desir War Cemetery is the most easterly of the Normandy cemeteries and those buried there died in the final stages of the campaign in pursuit of the German forces towards the Seine following the Normandy landings which began on 6^th June 1944.

Robert was born in 1913 and was the son of John and Millicent Collett of Watermoor Gloucester and husband of Betty May Collett of Watermoor.  He was buried at the Hottot les Bagues War Cemetery and his name is included amongst the list on the War Memorial in Cirencester.

The Hottot-les-Bagues War Cemetery 14 km from Bayeux contains over 1,000 burials of who were involved in the heavy fighting in June and July 1944 as the Commonwealth forces tried to press on from Bayeux to capture the town of Caen.

Terence was born in 1926 and was the son of Bertie John and Edith A Collett of Isleworth in Middlesex.  He was buried at the Forli War Cemetery.  In the 1911 Census Bertie Collett, who was born at Chelsea in 1906, was living with his parents Edward and Annie Collett and the rest of his family at Kensington in London.

Tom Walter was born at Wandsworth, London in 1911, the only son amongst the daughters of William Richardson Collett and Emily Caroline Eliza Spiers.  The name of Thomas Walter Collett is included on the Athens War Memorial – Face 8.

The Athens War Memorial stands within Phaleron War Cemetery, which lies a few kilometres to the south-east of Athens, at the boundary between old Phaleron district and Kalamaki district, on the coast road from Athens to Vouliaghmen.

Walter was born in 1904 and was the son of Mr and Mrs F F Collett and husband of Mary Ann Collett of Finchley in London.  He was buried at the Olonne Sur Mer Communal Cemetery – Grave 19, Row 8.  Walter’s parents were actually William and Lydia Frances Collett and in the 1911 Census Walter James was living with his family in Hackney where he was six years old.  His father William was born in 1877 and came from Brentford.

Collett, Yves 45 years	Sapper 1848666	3^rd Stevedore Battalion Royal Engineers	6 September 1940
Yves was born in 1895 on the island of Guernsey and was buried at the Coventry London Road Cemetery – Grave 44, Square 348.  When he was sixteen years of age he was working as a carrier at St Sampson on Guernsey, the home of Mrs Jeanne Gosky, a manager from France, when his place of birth was stated as Plehoul (?).  Rather curiously, his death was recorded at Coventry register office (Ref. 6d 1082) during the third quarter of 1940.
Collett(e), Herbert Frank 31 years	Gunner 1089347	121^st Field Regt Royal Artillery	1 July 1942
Herbert Frank was the husband of Winifred Hilda Collette of Brixton in London.  His name is included amongst those listed on the El Alamein War Memorial – Column 34.  The birth of Herbert F S Collette was recorded at Wandsworth register office (Ref. 1d 652) during the last quarter of 1910.  His mother was Edith Mary Seaman and his father, Herbert Tom Collett, was born at Gloucester in 1881 who, in 1901, was a milk carrier in Streatham, just south-east of Wandsworth.  In April 1911 Herbert Frank Collette was five months old and was living at Wandsworth in London with his family.  By the time of the 1939 Electoral Roll, Herbert Frank Collette was living at 52 Effra Parade in Norwood, Middlesex, with his mother Edith Mary Collette and his wife Winifred Hilda Collette.
It was during the third quarter of 1938 that ‘Bert Collette’ married Winifred H Mead at Lambeth (Ref. 1d 857).  Hilda was born at Weybridge in Surrey, her birth recorded at Chertsey register office (Ref. 2a 99) during the second quarter of 1912 and she died at Strood in Kent during 1999.  The birth of his father, as Herbert Tom Collett, was recorded at Gloucester (Ref. 6a 301) during the last quarter of 1881, the son of Henry and Emily Collett who were residing at Peckham in the London parish of North Camberwell in 1891.  Henry was 44 and Emily was 38 on that census day, when Herbert F Collett was 10 years old.  Herbert had two sisters, Dorothy (born in 1905) and Madeleine Emily (1907–1989).
Herbert’s father, Herbert Tom Collett (1881-1922), was born at 93 Falkner Street in Barton St Michael, Gloucester, the son of Henry Collett (b. 1837) and Emily Richings (b 1853).  On the day he married Edith Mary Seaman, of 50 High Road in Streatham, London, the address for Herbert Frank Collett was 22 Angles Road in Streatham.  Herbert’s grandfather, Henry Collett was baptised at Sandford-on-Thames, just south of Oxford, on 11^th April 1837, the eldest child of publican William Collett and his wife Elizabeth.

He was buried at Liveramentu, Colombo in Ceylon.

ROYAL NAVY

Collett, Albert Harry 29 years	Stoker 1^st Class P/KX88439	HMS Submarine Tempest	23 February 1942
Albert was born in 1913 and was the son of Florence Collett of Kempsey in Worcestershire.  His name is included amongst those listed on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial – Panel 68, Column 2.  At the time of the census of 1911 Florence Collett of Kempsey, who was born in 1883, was living there with her husband Ernest Collett who was born in 1872, by which time she already had three young children.  Ernest was born at Besford near Pershore where his father George Collett had also been born in 1828.
HMS Tempest was a new submarine and set out from Birkenhead on 1^st January 1942 bound for Gibraltar.  By early February it was at Malta and on 10^th set out for the Gulf of Taranto.  Two days into the voyage and accompanied by HMS sub Una they encountered a neutral safe ship the tanker Lucania which, in error, the Una torpedoed and sank.  This resulted in a ferocious depth-charge attack by a German destroyer which lasted for 18 hours and which eventually sank the Tempest.  Of the 62 crew on board 23 survived only to be made prisoners of war.

Charles was born in 1923 and was the son of Emily Mary Collett of Godreaman of Glamorgan.  His name is included amongst those listed on the Plymouth Naval Memorial – Panel 39, Column 2.
HMS Glorious was an aircraft carrier and was sunk by two German battle cruisers the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau on 18^th June 1940 during a journey between Narvik in Norway and Scapa Flow.  In April, when Charles died, the boat was in the Mediterranean and based out of Malta.

Cecil was born on 8^th August 1915 and was the son of Albert Ernest and Kate Millicent Collett.  His name is included amongst those listed on the Plymouth Naval Memorial – Panel 83, Column 3.

Collett, Ivan Ernest 23 years	Corporal PO/X4890	Royal Marines	6 January 1944
Ivan was born in 1921 and was the son of Frank and Sarah Huff Collett of Kenilworth in Warwickshire.  He was buried at the Syracuse War Cemetery in Sicily.  His mother was killed three years earlier – see Sarah Huff Collett.

Collett, Jack Arnold 29 years	Petty Officer Stoker P/KX82128	HMS Hollyhock	9 April 1942
Jack’s name is included amongst those listed on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial – Panel 67, Column 3.  His birth was recorded at Fulham register office (Ref. 1a 644) during the first three months of 1912, when his mother’s maiden name was stated as being Groves.

John was born in 1920 and was the son of Edgar and Florence Collett of Dudley in Worcestershire.  His name is included amongst those listed on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial – Panel 39, Column 3.  Edgar Collett may have been Edgar Boden Alexander Collett who was born at Aston in Birmingham during 1900.

HMS Esk was one of three Royal Navy destroyers that were sunk when they sailed into German minefield off the coast of Holland in 1940.

Leonard was born in 1922 and was the son of Fred and Maud Collett of Gorse Hill in Swindon.  His name is included amongst those listed on the Chatham Naval Memorial.

Phyllis was born in 1922 and was the daughter of Arthur Preston Collett and Sheila Collett of Felixstowe in Suffolk.  She was buried at the Mazargues War Cemetery in Marseilles – Grave 31, Row A, Plot 11.

The Mazargues War Cemetery at the Bouches-du-Rhone in Marseilles contains the graves of 267 service men and women killed during the Second World War, in addition to nearly 1,500 men from the First World War.

His name is included amongst those listed on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial – Panel 47, Column 3.  He was born at Surbiton in Surrey on 14^th June 1918.

Wilfred was born in 1920 and was the son of William and Dorothy Collett and husband of Alice Evelyn Collett of Newport in Monmouthshire.  His name is included amongst those listed on the Chatby Military War Memorial at Alexandria.

Albert was born at Penryn in Cornwall in 1911 and was killed in action over Germany while flying a Lancaster out of RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire.  He was awarded the Air Force Cross and was buried at the Durnbach Cemetery 30 miles south of Munich – Grave 3.  Known as Leslie, he was the son of James Arthur Collett and Lillie Hutchings of Penryn.

Collett, Charles Thomas 63 years	15 March 1941
Charles Thomas was born in 1878, the husband of Mrs C E Collett of Bream Gardens in East Ham/Barking, Essex.  He died, just around the corner from Bream Gardens, at 22 Hameway, in London, and was buried at nearby East Ham Borough Cemetery.  Charles, who was 33 and born at Chelsea, had been a house painter in 1911, when he and Caroline Ellen, aged 32, were living at 35 Wingford Road in Clapham Park in South London.  On that census day, the couple’s two children, Esther Joyce Collett aged five and John Collett who was one year old, were living with them.  Charles was the son of William and Elizabeth Collett and had an older brother William.

Doreen was born in 1932 and was the daughter of Charles Thomas Collett and Rose Emma Froggitt of 9 Stainsbury Street.  She died in the Bethnal Green tube station shelter accident alongside her mother and her brother who later died in hospital – see Rose Emma and Ronald Collett.  She was buried at Bethnal Green Metropolitan Borough Cemetery with her mother and her brother.

David Lewis was born in 1889 and was the husband of Mrs Rose Collett of Elborough Street in Wandsworth.  He died at Merton Road and was buried at Wandsworth Metropolitan Cemetery.  The marriage of David L Collett and Rose Turney was recorded at Wandsworth register office (Ref. 1d 1415) during the third quarter of 1914.

Florence Alice was born in 1893 and was the wife of Leonard Edward Collett of 203 Southend Lane in Lewisham.  She died at 352 Bromley Road and was buried Lewisham Metropolitan Borough Cemetery.  The marriage of Edward Leonard Collett and Florence Alice Kilner took place at St James’ Church in Bermondsey on 20^th August 1921.  Leonard was 25 and the son of James Thomas Collett, and Florence was 28 and the daughter of William Kilner.

Hugh was born on 26 May 1886 at Coventry, the son of Joseph Collett a fishmonger.  He was the husband of Agnes Elizabeth Collett of 49 St John Street in Coventry and died at the Armstrong-Siddeley Works in Parkside with his wife and two sons – see Agnes Elizabeth Collett, Cyril Ernest Collett and Sidney Albert Collett.  He was buried at the Coventry Borough Cemetery in London Road.

John was born in 1901 and was a War Reserve Police Officer of 22 Beamish Road in Wandsworth.  He was the son of John Harvey and Alice Collett of Mount Pleasant Farm at Ellenhall in Staffordshire.  He died at the Castle Hotel on Putney Bridge in Wandsworth and was buried at the Wandsworth Metropolitan Cemetery.

John was born in 1899 and was the husband of Mrs C M Collett of 10T Block in the Peabody Building in Hammersmith.  He died at 49 Queen Caroline Street in Hammersmith and was buried at the Hammersmith Metropolitan Cemetery.  He was the son of John Morgan and Maud Louisa Collett, the family living in Fulham in 1911.

Marguerite was born in 1899 of 21 Golf View Road in Kuala Lumpur in Malaya and was the wife of Mr J R W Collett.  She was buried at sea off the SS Tanjong Penang.

Ronald was born in 1935 and was the son of Charles Thomas Collett and Rose Emma Froggitt of 9 Stainsbury Street in Bethnal Green.  He was injured in the Bethnal Green tube station shelter accident in which his mother and sister both died and in which he died later that same day at the London Hospital – see Rose Emma Collett and Doreen Collett.  He was buried at Stepney Metropolitan Borough Cemetery

Collett, Rose Emma 50 years	3 March 1943
Rose Emma Froggitt was born at Bethnal Green in 1893 and was the wife of Charles Thomas Collett of 9 Stainsbury Street in Bethnal Green, who was born in 1886, whom she married at Mile End Old Town in 1917.  She died in the Bethnal Green tube station accident with her daughter and alongside her injured son who later died in hospital – see Doreen Collett and Ronald Collett.  Rose was buried at the Bethnal Green Metropolitan Cemetery with her daughter.  Charles and Rose had a total of eight children, the first four born at Mile End, the later four at Bethnal Green.

Sarah was a member of the Women’s Voluntary Service and was the wife of Frank Collett of 7 Arthur Street in Kenilworth.  She died at home at 7 Arthur Street and was buried at Kenilworth Urban District Council Cemetery.  Sarah died three years before her son who was killed in action in Sicily – see Ivan Ernest Collett.

Collett, Trevor David 29 years	1 July 1942
Trevor was born in 1913 and was on Emira Island when he died.  He was the son of Thomas and Lucretia Esther Collett and the husband of Olga Muriel Collett.  As a prisoner of war, he was buried at sea on the MV Montevideo Maru when it was sunk by the US submarine Sturgeon.
